Easy and Popular Recipes from Hawaii

Let's begin! From Furikake Salmon to Shoyu Chicken these recipes are some of our tried and true community favorites:

    Furikake Salmon

    Furikake Salmon

Furikake Salmon is a "very Hawaii" dish that we often make at home for weeknight dinners.

It's an easy dish that looks fancy and can be served many ways. We usually eat it over rice, or as DIY sushi hand rolls.

This is an Onolicious classic and one of our most popular recipes!

    Chicken Long Rice

    Chicken Long Rice

Chicken Long Rice is a popular Hawaiian dish and especially great on days where you're craving something simple and cozy. It's nourishing and I always feel so good after a bowl of chicken long rice!

FYI, this dish doesn't actually have rice in it. "Long rice" is just what we call vermicelli noodles (aka glass noodles) in Hawaii.

It's easy to make at home, and works great as a side dish. Pair with other Hawaiian dishes like lomi lomi salmon and lau lau for a feast.

    Tuna Rice

    Tuna Rice

A simple but oh so tasty meal of tuna and rice! Just mix canned tuna with Kewpie mayonnaise (a Japanese mayo that is super delicious!) and a bit of black pepper.

Spoon over rice, eat and enjoy. Many local families have a version of this recipes and we're happy to share ours today ^_^

    Local-Style Chicken Tofu

    Local-Style Chicken Tofu

Chicken Tofu is a popular local Hawaii dish that we often prepare at home for a simple lunch or dinner.

It's comfort food complete with onions, garlic, ginger, and green onions, Easy to make and satisfying. Enjoy with a big bowl of rice ^_^

Shoyu Hot Dogs or Octopus Hot Dogs

    Shoyu Hot Dogs

Shoyu Hot Dogs are a popular local snack, often found at potluck gatherings, okazuyas, and in lunch boxes!

Hot dogs are simmered with ginger, soy sauce, and brown sugar. They're saucy, sweet and salty, and best with a big bowl of rice.

P.S. If you're feeling creative, you can even make a version with octopus hot dogs!

    Japanese Pickled Cucumbers

    Japanese Pickled Cucumbers

These pickled cucumbers are fast and easy to make. All you need is the salt, sugar, rice vinegar...and the Japanese cucumber!

We love this as a side to accompany everything from mochiko chicken to misoyaki butterfish.

    Spam, Eggs, and Rice

    Spam, Eggs, and Rice

This is the ultimate local Hawaii breakfast.

You can order Spam, Eggs, and Rice at many restaurants in Hawaii (even McDonald's)!

And now you can make it yourself at home ^_^

    Haupia

    Haupia (Hawaiian Coconut Pudding)

Haupia is a classic Hawaiian dessert made from coconut milk, sugar, cornstarch, and water. It's like a cross between coconut jelly and pudding.

If you're looking for a version made with agar agar (instead of cornstarch, here's our agar agar haupia recipe).

Cut into bite sized squares and eat chilled. Simple and refreshing!

    Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp

    Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp

Hawaii shrimp trucks are famous for garlic shrimp! It's easy to make and super garlicky.

Make sure to eat this with rice (it's extra amazing with the garlic-butter sauce all over).

    Shoyu Chicken

    Shoyu Chicken

Shoyu Chicken is a popular and beloved local Hawaii dish that is found at many restaurants in Hawaii.

It is also easy to make at home with basic pantry ingredients. Feel free to double or even triple the recipe, it's wonderful for groups! Make this when you're craving a simple, comforting meal.
