You don't need to be vegan to love all the great vegan dining options in Honolulu. From Japanese style plate lunch to hearty bowls of ramen, plus smoothies and tacos, and beautiful tasting menus, these are our favorite vegan restaurants in Honolulu. Eat and enjoy!
Peace Cafe
A super delicious and casual vegan restaurant! Loved by local and visitors, Peace Cafe is vegan, with a mix of local Hawaii and Japanese sensibilities. Think katsu plate lunch, with good curry spooned on top, and happens to be vegan. We are also fans of the sampler plate (pictured above), housemade mochi cake, and all the drinks like the kinako and black sesame latte.
Leahi Health
Leahi Health is a plant based cafe with multiple locations on Oahu and Kauai. They are popular for vegan tacos (super delicious, lots of kale, and you can replace the pita bread with locally made tortillas) and a big menu of smoothies including a coffee one that I really enjoy in the mornings.
They also have housemade kombucha, savory bowls, and much more! Here's a detailed look at the menu and what I like to order. I like the Kaimuki and Manoa location because they have seating and lots of other stuff to do/eat nearby.
Wagaya
Wagaya is a popular local ramen spot (it's in the same complex as Sachi Sweets, not vegan but a must visit). There's often a wait so I like to go right at opening. They have a small but free parking lot. There's also street parking. My friend Kristen is vegan and we like coming here because she can have vegan ramen and I can also have ramen! I love their potato mochi appetizer and they can turn that into a vegan dish if you ask. Win-win ^_^
Tanaka Ramen
Kristen also said Tanaka Ramen in Ala Moana Shopping Center makes good vegan ramen. I will go try it soon!
Tane Vegan Izakaya
Love, love Tane Vegan Izakaya! It can get pricey but it's super good and fun. I like going with just one other person and sitting at the bar. We share a bunch of sushi (love the gobo, eggplant with miso, beancurd, shiitake...all of it really!) and appetizers. Maybe split a bowl of ramen at the end. We have many great izakayas in Hawaii but this is the only vegan one. They're open for dinner and reservations are recommend (you can also try walk-in right when they open).
Note: Only after coming here for years did I realize Tane is a sister restaurant to Shizen in San Francisco! I lived in SF for a few years and Shizen was one of my favorite spots.
Niu Soft-Serve
Really awesome coconut-based soft serve! Super friendly and a popular spot - it gets so busy on weekends and during after school hours with lots of families and kids. Ube and niu (coconut) are the two "main" soft serve flavors. They also have rotating flavors like mango, chocolate malt, toasted niu. You can DIY your own cup and toppings combo or select one of their signature sundaes.
I love the Hot Kulolo Sundae which comes with hot kulolo sauce and roasted mac nuts. They also make great malted milkshakes. I get the shake with peanut butter butter, cocoa, and coffee. They're just a minute drive from Wagaya so you can have vegan ramen for dinner and vegan soft serve for dessert!
Banan Hawaii
Banana-based ice cream! You can get the banana/original (I like this flavor best) or any of the rotating flavors like mango, chocolate, acai, and strawberry. Get it plain in a cup, or add a whole host of toppings. They also have wonderful sundaes if you're feeling indecisive about flavor and topping combos! The entire menu is vegan except for the honey which is a topping option.
natuRe waikiki
Kristen, Steph, Darien, and I had a belated joint birthday dinner natuRe waikiki (dinner had to be reschedule three times because everyone has kids and wow it is hard to schedule a dinner with just moms hahaha). They have a regular tasting menu and a vegan tasting menu. Kristen got the vegan one and everyone else had the regular one. It was pretty neat to experience both menus side by side! Pricey but good experience and nice to enjoy Waikiki at night...we are hardly ever in Waikiki for dinner.
Ai Love Nalo
Ai Love Nalo was closed for awhile but they just reopened!! This is one of my favorite places on the island. I'm crazy about their beautiful local fruit parfaits...layered with poi! The vegan lau lau is also awesome as is the luau stew and pretty much every single thing on the menu. Here's a detailed look at their popular dishes. Seriously, best spot ^_^ P.S. Make sure to also stop for fresh local eggs while in Waimanalo.
AV Restaurant
AV Restaurant is in Kaimuki and they also do a very popular vegan tasting menu! I'm a fan of their (non-vegan) sister place called Restaurant XO. I haven't been to AV Restaurant yet but my friend Shann went and really enjoyed it. I will also try check this out soon ^_^
Juicy Brew
Another Kaimuki gem! Juicy Brew is just a block from many good spots like The Curb, The Local General Store, Breadshop, and more! I like the "chicken" caesar wrap and yakisoba (same type of noodles we use to make this). For dessert, they make cookies and cakes and...mochi! The mochi often changes flavor and I love it all. I recently had the Okinawan sweet potato mochi with blueberries. Juicy Brew has a second location on the main floor of Hale Pawa'a - it's a medical building. I like to get a tasty drink and mochi on my way out after a doctor visit.
Umeke Market
The original Umeke Market was in Kahala and they had a wonderful garlic kale salad. They eventually moved downtown and the garlic kale salad is no longer on the menu. I miss that salad a lot (my mom keeps asking if I can recreate at home), but really enjoy the rest of their menu. I like the pono chili and kalo / taro stew. Think squid luau but with kalo / taro instead of squid. So good with big bowl of rice. If you're in a soup mood, definitely get the detox soup...it WAKES you up with a bright lemon pucker. Love it.
Down to Earth
Down to Earth is a natural and organic market. They started on King Street many years ago. Now they have have several locations including ones in Kakaako and Kailua. The deli menu plus hot foods and salads by the pound is a popular lunch and dinner takeout option. There's also robust smoothie and acai bowl menu. Plus wraps, paninis, and stir fry bowls made to order.
More Vegan Places
Below is a list several more vegan spots I need to visit / revisit and get photos. I'll update this post with more details as I go to each one:
- Surfer's Wife at the Kaka‘ako Farmers Market.
- The Beet Box Cafe in Kailua.
- Dagon, a Burmese restaurant on King Street.
- Rangoon Burmese Kitchen is another popular Burmese restaurant. I haven't been back in years but keep meaning to! Parking is just hard downtown at night haha. They have a tea leaf salad that Kristen really likes.
- Floralia is a vegan pizzeria!
- Honobono is a pop-up located in fishcake (in Kakaako). They post the menu on Instagram at the start of the month and you have to pre-order. I try to order each month but they must sell out within minutes of posting! Hopefully I can try this place one day, it looks super good.
