Fish and Poi is a famous song that chronicles our favorite Hawaiian and local foods! Here are the lyrics and details on all the good grinds (eats) in the song.
Do you know Sean Na’auao's Fish and Poi song? It is one of my favorite Hawaii songs ^_^
It's a song about Hawaiian food and local food! A entire song devoted to our favorite grinds (eats). Fish and Poi came out in 1998 and was an immediate hit.
I know the song by heart (many friends do as well). Pick a karaoke song? This would be it! I was especially grateful for Fish and Poi during NYC college years when I was missing home so much.

Fish and Poi is also the first song on the OnoliciousHawaii Spotify playlist.
Fish and Poi tells the story of a guy who's missing Hawaii big time. He's traveled many places but no places satisfies like home. He calls up his bruddahs (buddies) as he heads home, and starts thinking about the good grinds he'll eat soon. All the good stuff like fish and poi, shoyu poke, and lau lau.

Fish and Poi Song Lyrics
Verse 1:
I've been many places, tasted all the flavors
If there's one thing I can't understand, it's why I'm never satisfied
There's nothing like the feeling, when you start craving
Flashbacks reminiscing about that one very first luau
Bridge:
Soon as I start to head back home
I call my bruddahs up on the phone
We're heading down to that special place
Where you can bulk up for days
Verse 2:
Can't forget Papa's specialty
And Mama's poi mochi
Smoke meat, shoyu poke wit da rice can make a bad day feel real nice
Bridge:
I'm flashing back all over again
I know you feel what I'm feeling within
And every local boy would agree
That it's just the Hawaiian in me
Chorus:
I like my fish and poi, I'm a big boy
Lomi salmon, pipikaula, extra large lilikoi
Squid or chicken lu'au, don't forget the lau lau
Beef or tripe stew just to name a few, oh yeah
Reggae:
Me say
Me come from Hawaii me love de fish and de poi
Me eat da food 'cause me real big boy
Here da local girls yeah dey know what we need
They serve the food extra scoop of everything 'cause
I love de fishes baby I love de poi
Wit pipikaula extra rice on de side
Hawaiian food is like a rollercoaster ride
And me not goin' stop until this Hawaiian's fine
Chorus:
I like my fish and poi, I'm a big boy
Lomi salmon, pipikaula, extra large lilikoi
Squid or chicken lu'au, don't forget the lau lau
Beef or tripe stew just to name a few, oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah

I'm reminded of a couple other songs referencing Hawaii food - "Island Style" by John Cruz is one.
Another I recently thought of because I just mail ordered Sun Noodle shelf-stable saimin kits - Frank de Lima's "Don't Sneeze When You Eat Saimin"...fun song!
