We are lucky to have many great onigiri shops and Onigiri Onibe is the newest of the bunch! They opened summer 2025 in Downtown Honolulu and it has been packed since. My favorite item? The mentaiko with egg yolk onigiri, super ono. Here's what to order, where to park, and everything you need to know ^_^

Location / Parking
Onigiri Onibe is located on Alakea Street in Downtown Honolulu. There are many parking options, but parking is not easy in this area. You can try circling around for street parking (about $3 an hour, most meters take credit cards).
You can park in that public lot near the post office (at 335 Merchant St). There's also a third option...

...I like to stop by Chinatown whenever I go Downtown, so I park at the parking lot at 35 N Beretania Street. It's an underground parking lot and there's plenty of spaces. And most importantly, the spaces are easy to park in haha. It's about a 10 minute walk from that lot to Onigiri Onibe, but a fun one because you can pass many other shops and eateries along the way.

What To Get
Here's the fun part! Pictured above is the menu. They have 35 different onigiri options. It's fun, but overwhemling! It all looks so good...

...start at the bottom right. Pick one of the three onigiri that come topped with a marinated fresh egg yolk. I'm like the mentaiko with egg yolk. It's double egg!
The mentaiko (salted fish eggs) is mixed with mayo, and then topped with a marinated egg yolk. The yolk is super savory and oozes ever so slowly. Fold the nori over the onigiri and bite carefully...wowowowow.

You should also pick a second onigiri. They had a daily special of negitoro with wasabi and the egg yolk so I definitely had to order that. SO GOOD!

And don't forget soup. No onigiri meal feels complete without soup. They have two options: miso soup and tonijiru.
I ordered tonjiru (pictured above), hearty and generous with sliced pork and root vegetables. I think there was also sweet potato in there!

If you're really hungry you can get a third onigiri. I'm also a fan of the ume taku (plum with takuan) and the spicy takana mentaiko mayo, and yuzu salmon.
For me, two onigiri plus soup and this side of tsukemono / pickles is ideal amount of food. It leaves me full and satisfied but not stuffed. And with enough room for a hot latte on the way home ^_^

Grab and Go
They have lots of grab and go options if you need something fast. The $8 mini donburi (pictured above, on the right) is a good deal, especially these days.
And they have these giant musubi (pictured above, on the left) with salmon-mayo plus kombu and tuna-mayo plus kombu. But if you can wait about 10 minutes, the made-to-order onigiri are very much worth it.

Open Kitchen and Seating
Onigiri Onibe is mainly a takeout spot, but they have seating along a long bar. The bar is located on the left when you walk in. First come, first serve. There's about 10 seats at the bar. Justin and I went for Monday lunch at 11am and waited 15 minutes for two seats to open up.
When it's busy, all orders are packed to-go, even if you plan on eating there. Makes sense because it gets really busy and hectic during lunch. During slow times, they'll plate the onigiri quite beautifully. Try going during the off-times if you can. It's fun to sit and eat there, watch all onigiri being made to order. I love the tall ceilings, open kitchen, and beautiful red donabe lining the kichen. This spot is a real downtown gem.

Useful Tips
They usually post a daily special (pictured above) near the register, make sure to check it out! It was negitoro with kizami wasabi the day I went. SO GOOD with the seasoned egg yolk on top.
Some of the onigiri automatically come with the seasoned egg yolk on top. But you can also add an egg yolk on top of any onigiri for $2 more. The egg yolk is a real delicious highlight, and Onigiri Onibe also the only onigiri shop in town that offers this.
They offer larger onigiri catering / party packs...great for bringing to potluck party or family gatherings. The posted this an example of this $50 pack which includes ten onigiri, chicken karaage, and pickles.
Oh yes, between Onigiri Onibe, Mana Musubi, Gohan, and Iyasume, we are very lucky to live Hawaii ^_^
