    Fujiyama Texas (Oahu)

Published: Oct 4, 2024 · Modified: Oct 4, 2024 by Kathy · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Fujiyama Texas is a popular izakaya in Honolulu specializing in kushi katsu (skewered katsu) for dinner and Japanese breakfast in the morning! It's small, bustling, and open all day and night. These are our favorite dishes to order ^_^

    Fujiyama Texas Hawaii

Everyone loves Fujiyama Texas. The food is good and the prices are great. The energy is fun and the service is friendly. What more could you want?

I've visited for early morning weekday breakfast with a friend. And for festive group dinners with visiting guests. I've had late night snacks and drinks at the bar and lunch at a table by the window with my cousins.

This place is open all day and all night (and well into the night). It's reliable and tasty and there's someone on the menu for everyone.

    Location

Fujiyama Texas is located on King Street in the McCully / Mo'ili'ili neighborhood of Honolulu. They have plenty of free parking right in front of the restaurant. They share a lot with a few other establishments but I've always been able to find a parking spot.

Next door to Fujiyama Texas is a small Japanese bar called Pre Storage - we love to stop here for a second dinner / extra round of drinks post-dinner. There is not much else that is super close in terms of walking distance but you're only a few minutes drive to great food spots like Fujiya for fresh mochi and Sachi Sweets for made-to-order bentos and Japanese desserts.

    What To Get

    Japanese Breakfast Sets
If you visit during breakfast, you must order one of the Japanese breakfast sets. They offer one of the most affordable Japanese breakfast in town, and they serve local fish! How awesome is that?

The fish and rice sets come with:

    • Fish - Grilled salmon, miso butterfish, or the daily grilled local fish.
    • Rice - You can replace the regular rice with yaki-musubi (grilled rice ball).
    • Miso soup - You can upgrade the miso soup to tonjiru which is a pork and vegetable miso soup. Their tonjiru is awesome and I recommend doing this!
    • Pickled cucumbers
    • Rolled omelet
    • Seaweed and kinpira gobo

If you want something meatier you can order the breakfast sets that come with prime rib or kakuni (Japanese braised pork belly).

They also have udon for breakfast! Breakfast noodles, oh yes.

They make all kinds of udon from curry udon to kakuni udon and miso beef udon. My favorite is actually the soupless udon. It's called maze soba soupless udon on the menu and it pretty similar to these two dishes we make at home.

The soupless udon is pictured in the photo above. It's topped with simmered pork, onions and bean sprouts, green onions and nori, an onsen egg, and a really good sauce that tasted like mentsuyu but thicker.

I also like to add a side of mochi kinchaku (pictured to the right of the udon on the blue and white plate). This is essentially fried tofu aka aburaage / inari-age stuffed with mochi and braised. Sooo good.

Here's a look at the breakfast menu if you are curious!

They have full menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and midnight dinner posted on their website.

    Kushi Katsu
If you're here for dinner, you definitely need to order kushi katsu. It is after all, a kushi katsu restaurant.

What is kushi katsu? It's like katsu, but on skewers. So meat and vegetables, cut into bite size pieces, put on a skewer, battered and fried! Served hot, hot, hot.

What's not to love? It especially good with a cold beer.

I like 3-4 types of kushi katsu per person when I go. Mainly because I love fried food but if I eat too much fried stuff I don't feel great after. We try to balance things out with non-fried dishes.

As for which types of kushi katsu to order: I love all the veggies like the okra and mountain yam. I also like the mochi and shiitake mushrooms and eggplant. There's also plenty of meat and seafood! Think chicken wings, prime chuck rib, and soft shell crabs. There's also oysters and ahi and more.

They have different types of dipping sauces to go with the kushi katsu. You can dip the kushi katsu into any sauce you prefer, but they have suggested sauce pairings. You can see it in the photo above. I like how they have it taped to the cups that store the kushi katsu ordering slips. It comes in handy!

    Grated Radish With Ume (Plum)
This is a simple dish, but never to be underestimated! The grated radish with ume is clean and satisfying, especially when paired with all the kushi katsu. You can also order the grated radish with nametake mushrooms instead of ume, but I like it better with ume.

    Yamaimo Mentai
Yamaimo Mentai is my single favorite dish here and one I have on my "dishes to recreate at home" list. It's the dish that is pictured at the top of this post.

They take thick slices of yamaimo (mountain yam), top it with a mentaiko mixture (that's the part I can't figure out how to make), and then grill (or broil) it. Three pieces to an order. I can eat two orders on my own. It is so good.

    Fried Mochi in Dashi Soup
This is my other favorite menu item! You know I love everything mochi, especially in savory preparations.

This dish features one big and gorgeous square of mochi, deep fried and then served in hot dashi broth. It's topped with grated radish, nori, and green onions.

Fried mochi is logistically hard to share (plus it's so good you won't want to share it), so just order one per person.

    When To Go

Fujiyama Texas is opened early and late and in between! Not many places do this so it is appreciated.

Breakfast is 7-11am daily. Breakfast is usually pretty quiet so you can go anytime, and there shouldn't be a wait.

    Lunch is 11am-2pm daily.

Dinner is 5-11pm daily. Dinner can get really busy. If you don't have reservations, go early to get a table. If you plan to go during prime dinner hours, definitely make a reservation.

Midnight Dinner (haven't had a midnight dinner in ages!) is 11pm-3:30pm. They have midnight dinner on all nights except for Tuesdays.

Amazing! They're basically open all day, everyday.

    Insider Tips and Notes

Here are key tips to keep in mind:

    • Free parking is located right in front of the restaurant.
    • Looking for a round of post dinner drinks? Walk over to Pre Storage which is right next door in the same complex.
    • If you go in a group, you'll have to get a table. But if you're going with just another person, then get a seat at the bar. The bar is more fun and you can see the kushi katsu in action.
