Delicious local eggs are abundant in Hawaii and Eggs Hawaii / Ka Lei Eggs is a popular and convenient spot to purchase fresh eggs on Oahu. Here's everything you need to know before you go ^_^
Buying local eggs straight from the source is a pretty common thing in Hawaii. What we take for granted is actually very special!
Many egg farms in Hawaii sell the eggs at the farm, or have a nearby retail outlet where you can purchase fresh eggs.
We took you inside OK Poultry in Waimanalo, and today we're at Ka Lei Eggs / Eggs Hawaii ^_^
Location
Ka Lei Eggs / Eggs Hawaii is in located in the Kalihi neighborhood of Honolulu.
The location is super convenient, especially because there is lots of free and easy parking.
There's also lots of good food nearby! From chichi dango at Nisshodo to Nami Kaze and Ethel's Grill, you should plan a few food stops before picking up the eggs. You're also a pretty short drive to Chinatown and Downtown for even more good eats.
Get a nice parking spot and look for the big white sign that says Eggs Hawaii Inc. Let's go in!
It a bright and clean shop. This is their retail shop. On the left wall is a large wooden menu listing all the egg options for the day.
The menu specifies the grade of eggs. On the day we went, it was all Grade A.
And you can pick:
- Size: they had jumbo or medium options.
- Type: white or brown.
- Organic or non-organic.
Eggs are sold by the tray. For the jumbo size eggs, 1 tray has 20 eggs. For the medium size eggs, 1 tray has 30 eggs.
They also have specials! I like to purchase the specials. We purchased the $25 special which had 60 organic, brown, and medium size eggs.
For an even better price, you can get "mixed size trays" which has eggs of all different sizes.
On the bottom of the menu they have "brown checks" and "white checks." What are checks? They're eggs that are slightly cracked but still good to eat. It's a super good deal at 90 eggs for $15!
The shop was busy when we went on an early Saturday afternoon.
The line moves fast and most people there seem like regular who knew right away what kind of eggs the wanted.
Place your order at the register and it just takes a minute for them to arrange and package your egg tray. I'm getting hungry for eggs already!
Here is our egg order!
There are 30 eggs on each tray and 60 eggs in total.
They tie them nice and neat on the tray so you don't have to worry about anything slipping easily (though you still should be pretty careful).
The tray won't fit into most coolers unless you have a very big cooler, so I just place a clean towel or two on the floor and place the egg trays on top. I make sure to drive very smoothly all the way home haha.
Where Else To Buy Local Eggs?
If you can't make it to Ka Lei Eggs or any other local egg farm/shop, we can luckily purchase local eggs from most supermarkets in Hawaii.
From Nijiya (they also carry TKG eggs from OK Poultry), to Whole Foods Hawaii, and even Costco Hawaii...you can buy local eggs at many shops!
When you purchase local eggs from the supermarket there is less variety to select from (eg. white versus brown, organic versus non-organic, and different size eggs), but it can more convenient.
The best part is that local eggs often don't cost much more than mainland eggs, but they are much more delicious. Good to buy local when possible ^_^
Easy Eggs Dishes
Now that you have so many eggs, what to make? That's what I'm here for hahah. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Easy Egg Scrambles
For easy scrambles, I love to eat okra and eggs, and loofa/luffa and eggs.
Chinese Tea Eggs
Everyone loves these tea eggs. Delicate but flavorful!
Braised Eggs
Thit Kho is a really delicious Vietnamese dish of braised pork and eggs. Sometimes I even double the amount of eggs in this recipe so that I can have extra for breakfast the next morning (with rice, of course).
Classic Local Hawaii Breakfast
Spam, eggs, and rice! A famous local classic, you can even find it on the breakfast menu at McDonald's Hawaii. Here's how to make it.
Omelette
An omelette for natto lovers only ^_^
Tamago Kake Gohan
A must when you have super fresh and good local eggs.
Fried Eggs
Always an excellent idea for simple and/or last minute meals. Try "pocket eggs" and scallion eggs.
