This simple Natto Omelette is healthy and delicious! It's one of the many ways we love to eat natto. Season with soy sauce and green onions. Enjoy with rice ^_^
I love natto for every meal of the day, breakfast included.
Instead of our usual meat and cheese omelette, we've been making natto omelettes. It's just as easy (actually, it's far more easy), and tasty.
I eat it with a little rice and my day is off to a good start!
P.S. The omelette is also great with furikake sprinkled on top.
Ingredients
Here's what you'll need:
- Eggs - Use local eggs if can!
- Natto - You just need one package of natto for this recipe. The natto package weights are slightly different across brands, but that is fine.
- Soy sauce
- Green onions
Instructions
Let's get cooking!
First, prepare the natto. Open the package of natto. Remove the seasoning packets (there are usually two - one is soy sauce-based and another is hot mustard). Slide the plastic layer/cover off the natto and discard.
Open the seasoning packet(s) and add it to the natto.
Use chopsticks to mix/whip the natto with the seasonings. Mix it well until the natto looks frothy.
Note: If your natto comes with comes with seasoning packets (most do), you can skip the soy sauce mentioned in the ingredient list above.
But if your natto does not come with seasoning packets, then add a teaspoon of soy sauce to the natto before you mix/whip it. You can also add hot mustard if you want but that's optional.
We used natto from Aloha Tofu Factory for this recipe. Their natto comes with soy sauce but not hot mustard. So depending on my mood, sometimes I add my own hot mustard.
In a small bowl, beat the eggs and add a pinch of salt.
In a medium pan over medium heat, add some oil. Once the pan is warmed, pour in the eggs. Gently swirl the pan to distribute the eggs evenly.
Once the eggs start to set, use a spatula to carefully push the cooked parts of the egg inwards, so that any uncooked eggs pour over to the edges and cook.
Then use a spoon to add the natto to one half of the omelette. Top with half of the green onions.
Let cook for another 30 seconds to set.
The fold the other half of the eggs over the natto and green onions.
Remove from heat. It's ready to eat!
Top Tip
Make sure to mix the natto really well. The more you mix, the better it tastes.
Use chopsticks to mix/whip the natto with the seasonings that are included in the container. Mix until the natto looks almost airy and frothy.
Aim for at least 100 mixes! Even better if you can do more.
FAQ
You are in the right place ^_^ Try some of my favorites:
- Maguro Natto
- Natto Udon
- Okra Natto
- Natto Spaghetti
- Natto Rice
- Natto Egg Toast
- Natto Toast with Cheese and Cabbage
I like to keep a ratio of 2 eggs to 1 package of natto for this omelette. That is the ideal balance.
- Add more! In addition to the natto, you can layer in sliced avocado, mozzarella cheese, and even sliced okra.
- Mix everything together and then make the omelette. Whip the natto and mix it with the eggs. And then pour everything into the pan at once to make the omelette. Same ingredients just different style.
- Add heat/spice to the dish with shichimi togarashi.
- Top the omelette with furikake (that's what we did in this post). You can use any type of furikake you have available

I love natto. Never had it in an omelet before but it sounds interesting. Maybe I will try it some time when I am home alone. The smell will probably not be liked by my wife.

Haha yes this is a dish I love but also a dish I eat alone. No one else in the family loves natto this much 🙂
