Juicy shrimp and pork wontons in chicken broth! Simple and nourishing, Wonton Soup always hits the spot! Finish with green onions and white pepper for a wonderful bowl of soup.
Any time I get home from a trip or a long day, the first thing I want is something soup-y. Which means either jook (congee) or wonton soup!
Both are simple dishes to make, but wonton soup is a smidgen easier because we always keep a stash of homemade wontons in the freezer.
If there's fresh homemade chicken broth, I use that. If not, I use store bought broth. Use what you have!
Combine the two and add simple seasonings to the broth to complete the soup. Eat hot and enjoy. I hope you'll love this as much as we do ^_^
Ingredients
Here's what you'll need:
- Shrimp and pork wontons - fresh or frozen
- Chicken broth - homemade or store bought
- Sesame oil
- Soy sauce
- White pepper
- Salt
- Green onion
Instructions
Let's get cooking!
First prepare the soup. In a medium pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil.
Season with the sesame oil and white pepper. Taste and add a little salt if need. Turn the heat to low and put a lid on the pot.
On a separate burner, boil a pot of water (use a medium size pot). Gently add in the wontons and carefully stir to make sure the don't stick to the bottom of the pot. Once the wontons start floating, cook for another 1-2 minutes.
Note: we usually cook fresh wontons for 3 minutes and frozen wontons for 6 minutes, but exact times depend on the size of your pot, how high the heat is, and amount of water used.
Use a slotted spoon or strainer to scoop out the wontons. Divide the wontons into two bowls. Ladle the soup over the wontons.
Top with chopped green onions and a little more white pepper. Eat hot and enjoy!
Top Tip
Prepare a TON of wontons in advance and store them in the freezer. Frozen wontons keep for 2 months in the freezer and they always come in handy.
When I make wontons, I like to set aside a weekend afternoon and make a couple hundred pieces (not kidding)!
We are always so thrilled to have homemade wontons ready to go in the freezer. Everyone is always like, wow that was a good idea hahaa. And I'm like, I told you so! We use the frozen wontons for simple soups like this, for more complete noodles, we serve it dry style and with good sauces.
FAQ
You can make super juicy pork wontons. Use those pork wontons or the shrimp and pork wontons from this post to make wontons with sesame sauce or make spicy wontons.
Here's how to fold wontons!
For dumplings, try two classics: Pork and Chive Dumplings or Pork and Cabbage Dumplings.
You can add egg noodles to make wonton mein.
Or blanch baby boy choy and add that to the soup. You can also make the bok choy or choy sum separately like this and serve it on the side.
If you have extra time, simmer a couple pieces of sliced ginger and smashed garlic cloves in the chicken broth. Simmer it for 30 minutes then remove the ginger and garlic. And then use the broth as called for in the recipe.
Don't assemble the soup until you are ready to eat it! You can prepare wontons in advance and freeze them. And you can also make the soup well in advance.
But don't boil the wontons and add it to the soup till you are just ready to eat. Cooked wontons don't reheat well (they turn mushy), so only make as much as you need ^_^
