These Pork and Chive Dumplings are filled with juicy ground pork, garlic chives, and all the good seasonings. Easy to make! Boil, steam, or steam-fry and enjoy ^_^
We've tried growing many things at home. Nothing grows as easily as garlic chives. They're easy to grow and they grow quickly.
Most importantly, they are super delicious. We often use garlic chives to make these classic Chinese dumplings!
These dumpling are wonderful. They made from ground pork, garlic chives, and pantry staples like garlic, oyster sauce, and soy sauce.
Fold and cook and eat! Or you can also freeze them all (your future self will thank you for this).
What Are Garlic Chives?
Garlic chives are also called Chinese chives. They are the same thing!
Garlic chives have flat leaves and are much taller than regular chives. They also have this great garlic-y flavor, hence the name.
You can purchase garlic chives in most Asian markets. What to do with them? You can make these dumplings, or make Chive and Egg Stir Fry (I make this often for an easy meal) or Chive Vermicelli Egg Pancakes.
Ingredients
Here's what you'll need:
- Ground pork
- Garlic chives
- Garlic
- Oyster sauce
- Soy sauce
- Sesame oil
- Salt
- Sugar
- White pepper
- Dumpling wrappers
Instructions
Let's get cooking!
Mix all the ingredients together (except for the dumpling wrappers) in a large bowl.
Make sure the filling is mixed very well so that all the chives stick to the pork, otherwise you'll have a hard time wrapping the dumplings.
Prepare your dumpling wrapping station. You'll need:
- A large tray or multiple plates to place the wrapped dumplings.
- A small bowl of water. The water will be used to wet the edges of the dumpling wrappers.
- A plate or clean and flat surface to fold the dumplings.
- The large bowl with the prepared dumpling filling and a spoon to scoop the filling.
Place 1 tablespoon of the filling on a single wrapper. Wet the edges of the wrapper. Gently fold and pleat (or you can even fold them in the shape of wontons). Set aside.
Repeat until you've used all the pork and chive dumpling filling.
To cook the dumplings, you can boil, steam, or steam-fry. We did steam-fry in the photo above.
Serve the dumplings with a dipping sauce of red vinegar (pictured above). Or you can make an easy dumpling dipping sauce.
I also like a bowl of rice on the side, we had quinoa rice the day I took these photos. Eat and enjoy!
Top Tip
For wrapping the dumplings, most people use a large plate. To make things easier, just cover a portion of your table/counter with plastic wrap. Then use that entire surface for dumpling wrapping.
You can lay out multiple dumpling wrappers (I do up to a dozen at a time) and spoon filling out on all those wrappers. Then wet the edges of them all, and then fold them all. It makes things faster and easier.
Once you're done, remove and discard the plastic wrap. One less dish to wash, and one less table/counter to clean!
FAQ
I recommend cooking only as many pieces as you plan to eat.
Assembled and uncooked dumplings freeze VERY well (we keep dozens in the freezer at any given time...so good for last minute meals).
To freeze uncooked dumplings, place the dumplings on a tray. Note: make sure they do not touch each other. Store uncovered in the freezer for 30 minutes. This step helps prevent the dumplings from sticking together when you freeze them. Then remove them from a tray and place the dumplings in a large zip top bag.
Then whenever you crave dumplings, whether it's 1 or 100 pieces, just take out as many as you need!
You're in the right place!
For another classic, make Pork and Cabbage Dumplings.
Pork Hash is a local favorite in Hawaii. It's a local version of Chinese shumai. You can also think of it almost like an open face dumpling.
We love Pork Wontons and especially Pork Wontons with Sesame Sauce. And Spicy Wontons! Do you know how to fold wontons?
Kimchi Dumplings are always a hit. So are Sichuan / Szechuan Dumplings.
Don't forget, you need a good Dumpling Dipping Sauce.
If you have a choice between lean and fatty ground pork, please get the fatty ground pork! It will make for a significantly more delicious dumpling.
