Orange and salt is go-to home remedy for pesky winter coughs (or anytime you're feeling under the weather). You only need two ingredients: oranges and salt. Steam and eat hot, you'll feel so much better ^_^
It's that time of the year again...
...when it seems like everyone has some sort of cough/cold! We might not have freezing weather and snow in Honolulu, but there still is a cold weather season. I'm always excited for a reason to wear cozy sweaters but always dread the inevitable cough that comes around now.
Whenever I feel the start of a scratchy throat or cough, the first thing I do is make steamed oranges with salt.
We often have oranges in the fridge, and the only other ingredient you need in this recipe is salt! The whole recipe takes 30 minutes from start to finish Not only should it make you feel better (it sure does for us), but it also tastes good.

Here's what you'll need:

See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
Let's get cooking our orange and salt for cough!
Prepare orange.
Rub each orange with salt and rinse it under water for a couple of minutes. Wash it well and make sure the skin is clean.
Slice off the top of each orange, and set the tops aside.
Salt the oranges.
Sprinkle a teaspoon of salt on the open part of each orange.
Then use a fork to poke a few small holes to help the salt sink deeper into the orange.
Place the tops back on each orange. Place each closed orange into individual dishes/bowls.
Cook the oranges.
Steam the oranges for 20 minutes.
Eat and enjoy.
Remove from the steamer. Remove the tops/caps from the orange. There are two ways you can eat the orange:
- Peel and discard the skin. Then break the orange into wedges and eat it just like that.
- Use a spoon or fork and scoop the orange out of the shell/skin.
Eat the oranges hot and enjoy!
P.S. You can also drink the juice/liquid in the bowl...it's a little bitter from the skin but believed to be very good for you.
Substitutions and Variations
Here are a few popular ways you can change up the recipe:
- Soak the oranges before cooking - We rub the outside of the orange with salt and then rinse under running water to clean the skin. But if you have extra time you can instead soak the oranges in a large bowl of salt water for 15 minutes. Then rinse and proceed with the recipe.
- To eat, use a spoon instead of peeling the skin - We peel the skin and then eat the orange wedges. But you can also serve the whole orange in a bowl and use a spoon to scoop our the juices and meat. There's less waste when you peel the skin (and also easier to eat), but some people like to do it with a spoon and dig into a whole orange.
- Microwave - Instead of steaming, you can cook the orange in the microwave for 1.5 - 2 minutes. The microwave version doesn't taste as delicious, it feels less nourishing and juicy, but is faster and easier. Though with that said, steaming is still the preferred method!
- Honey - Drizzle a little honey on top of each open orange (after adding the salt). Then close the tops, steam, and eat.
I recommend making the recipe as-is for your first try, and then feel free to try all the different variations ^_^
Equipment
We use this type of tiered steamer at home - it takes up a lot of room but if you steam often, it's worth the storage space.
But you can do a makeshift steamer with a large pot and small steaming rack.
Storage
The steamed oranges are best enjoyed hot, straight from the steamer. But if there are leftovers, you can keep the oranges in the refrigerator for 1-2 days.
Steam the oranges for a few minutes to reheat (you can also reheat them in the microwave if you're in a rush).
Top Tip
You can make this recipe in the steamer or microwave. Microwave is tempting because it is faster and easier. But I suggest take the time to steam the oranges. It makes a world of difference in texture and flavor...I also feel it's more effective in soothing that cough away.
FAQ
Yes! After the oranges are done cooking, a lot of juice/liquid will pool in the bowl. It's bitter but believed to be good for you. I like to drink that outside liquid first, and then I peel and eat the orange.
Use sea salt or kosher salt. Table salt will work in a pinch, just make sure to use a little less.
There's not guarantee or promise, but this has been our go-to remedy for years. Warm salted oranges, so juicy and tasty, always make us feel better.
We love homemade Black Sesame Soy Milk, Pandan Soy Milk, and Jujube Ginger Tea.
