We make hot chocolate in the winter and Frozen Hot Chocolate in the summer! This easy and delicious drink is made with your choice of milk, cacao powder, and dates (which we use instead of sugar). Blend with ice for a wonderful slushy drink ^_^
This is a super simple drink recipe...only 3 ingredients! Not counting ice 😉
I first learned about the hot version of this drink when I lived in NYC. I was cooking dinner with a friend and she made it as surprise dessert drink. Perfect because there was a snowstorm outside! It was velvety and so rich. Happy memories and a wonderful way to warm up.
Best part is that it wasn't heavy so we felt good after drinking it. And also, no sugar! She used pitted dates to sweeten the drink.
When I moved back home to Hawaii, I tried to recreate the drink but it wasn't the same. Why? It's too hot in Hawaii. Hot chocolate doesn't satisfy the same way.
But I loved the flavor and wanted to make a frozen / slushy version. This frozen hot chocolate is a great hit with the family and easy to make (it's even easier than the hot version).
All you have to do is put all the ingredients into the blender. That's it.
Added bonus: it happens to be vegan!
Ingredients
Here's what you'll need:
- Milk - You can use any type of milk. We often use cashew or almond milk. It's also great with home made soy milk!
- Dates - Pitted.
- Cacao powder - Use cacao powder (not cocoa powder).
- Cinnamon powder - Optional, but tasty.
- Ice.
Instructions
This is very easy. Just pour and blend:
Place all the ingredients in a blender.
Blend on high until everything is well blended and slushy.
Drink and enjoy! ^_^
Top Tip
Come cooler months, this drink is also delicious served hot. To make the hot version, just skip the ice, but follow the same ingredient list and recipe steps.
Once you've blended the drink, pour it into a small pot and warm it over stove. Warm it over medium heat and stir frequently to make sure the hot chocolate doesn't burn or bubble over. Drink hot and enjoy!
P.S. Both the frozen and hot version are great with fresh whipped cream.
FAQ
Because it's a slushy drink it will not keep well. So only make as much as you want to drink ^_^
Yes! This recipe makes enough for 2 drinks. Feel free to cut the recipe in half to make 1 drink. Or double it to make 4 drinks.
Very flexible. You can use more/less milk. Use any type of milk. Use more/less ice (depends how "frozen" you like it). Change the sweetener - I really love it with all dates, but you can also use half honey and half dates). Options are endless!
