Why This Recipe Works

You only need 3 ingredients (one of which is ice) and a blender to make Mango Slush. Keep it super simple because you want to let the taste of the mango shine. Simple is best.

Mango is the key ingredient. We add ice to give the drink that slush texture. And a little bit of honey to round out the sweetness.

This recipe is also very flexible. Feel free to change up the proportions and add in any other ingredients you like. We use fresh mango when in season, but frozen mango is also great. A squeeze of lemon makes this drink extra bright!

Mango Season

One of the best parts about living in Hawaii is...mango season! The season starts early summer and you can see, smell, and taste sweet local mangoes everywhere. From homes to restaurants and local markets, it's like everyone has mango on the mind.

There's a big variety of local mangoes, each with a slightly different flavor profile. Everyone seems to have a favorite. But I'm not too picky, I love all local mangoes.

Some people are lucky to have one (or two or three!) mango trees at home. Others have friends or family who share the bounty. Either way, mango season is one of the most exciting time of the year.

We eat it fresh. Cut, score, and devour over the sink with both hands. Oh boy, a slightly chilled mango on a hot summer day is everything.

Sometimes there are so many mangoes that we can't eat it all before they get overripe. It's a strange "problem" to have (and one I really missed when living in NYC).

So what do we do? We make mango desserts. Desserts like mango pudding (my favorite!), mango tapioca, the ever popular mango bread (imagine banana bread but made with mango)...and this mango slush!

Ingredients

Here's what you'll need:

  • Fresh mangoes! If you don't have fresh mangoes, it is totally ok to use frozen mangoes.
  • Honey - Any kind of honey works. We love local Hawaiian honey.
  • Ice - I like to use a 2:1 ratio of mango to ice. Feel free to use more or less ice depending on how "shushy" you want the drink to be.

Gather everything together and let's start blending!

Step by Step Directions

Ready? It's super easy.

Prepare the mango.
If using fresh mango, scoop out all the flesh, place it in a bowl and let chill in the freezer for 10-15 minutes.

If using frozen mango, you can just proceed to the next step.

Melt the honey.
Dissolve the honey in 1 tablespoon of hot water. Set aside.

Tip: This step is important because if you just add the honey to the blender, the cold temperature of the ice and mango will just make the honey hard and it won't evenly mix into the slush.

Blend.
In a blender, combined the mango, honey, and ice. Blend for 1-2 minutes.

Ready to drink.
Pour into two cups and serve immediately. Enjoy!

FAQs and Tips

How long can this slush keep?

Like any slush drink, you'll should drink it right away (before the ice melts!) If you've made too much and can't finish it all, you can freeze it to make mango popsicles.

Got lemon or lime?

If you happen to have a fresh lemon or lime, squeeze half a lemon or lime into the blender (with all the other ingredients). Then blend and enjoy. The bit of citrus gives the drink a really nice and bright lift.

Can you blend in other fruits?

Yes! If we have extra pineapple pieces, I sometimes add that in. Don't add too much pineapple though (it will overpower the mango flavor).

You can also add a splash of orange juice!

For a fun flavor combo, sprinkle some li hing mui powder to make li hing mango slush ^_^

Mango desserts in Hawaii.

Be sure to look out for all the super neat mango desserts you'll find in Hawaii! You'll find mango bread at local bakeries (many people also make mango bread at home). We also go crazy for mango pudding and mango tapioca.

During mango season, many restaurants incorporate mango into desserts...look out for all the dessert specials. Don't forget about all the pickled mango you find at different stores (like the crack seed store) and roadside stands around the island. Or you can even make pickled mango at home...oh man, its super onolicious. All mango everything everyday!
