A simple and super delicious all-purpose sauce made from fresh garlic chives. Just salt and mix with sesame seeds and sesame oil. Garlic Chive Sauce is tasty on everything from soft tofu to roasted salmon and steamed chicken!

Kat post this recipe for garlic chive sauce last year and I've had it booked ever since. We eat lots of garlic chives at home so I knew it was something my entire family would enjoy ^_^
I finally got around to making it yesterday, and wowow it's so good. Easy and packed with flavor. I love it.
What Are Garlic Chives?
Garlic chives go by many names! Popular ones are:
- Garlic chives
- Chinese chives
- Nira (the Japanese name)
They're like regular chives but with a strong garlick-y flavor. We use them in everything from dumplings to fish patties, noodle stir fries, and even vermicelli pancakes, and egg scrambles.
Garlic chives are very easy to grow. We grow them at home, but because we go through so much I also supplement by buying them at the Chinese and Japanese supermarkets. Prices varies though mostly recently I saw them for $6.99 per pound at Nijiya.
Ingredients
Here's what you'll need:
- Fresh garlic chives - Garlic chives are usually sold by the bunch and we use one bunch for this recipe (about ¼ pound).
- Salt
- Roasted sesame seeds
- Sesame oil
Instructions
Let's get cooking!
Prepare and salt.
Wash and dry the garlic chives. Finely chop the garlic chives and place it in a bowl. Sprinkle the salt on top, gently mix, and let sit for 30 minutes.
Squeeze out water.
Squeeze out all the water from the garlic chives. I usually do two rounds to really get all the water out.
Season.
Add the roasted sesame seeds and sesame oil to the bowl. Use chopsticks and mix well until evenly combined.
Serve and enjoy!
The sauce is now ready to use. So easy, right?
I like to spoon the garlic chive sauce over small blocks of soft tofu. I actually like to eat this for breakfast a lot! If you prepare the sauce the day before, it's so fast and easy. The sauce is also great with salmon or chicken, steamed or roasted.

Sometimes I cook a piece of salmon or chicken thigh in the toaster oven. Then put the sauce on right after you take it out of the oven. So good!
