Hot toast, soft butter, and a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk! The secret to this easy recipe is all in the details. I love Sweetened Condensed Milk Toast for breakfast, afternoon snack, and midnight treats ^_^

This simple but super delicious toast is best known as a Hong Kong-style dish. You can find it on the menu of many cha chaan tengs (which is a Hong Kong-style cafe) around the world. Or you can make it at home ^_^
Condensed milk toast been adapted everywhere...including Hawaii where we ate a lot of this growing up!
HK Cafe
If you want to try this dish at a restaurant in Honolulu, HK Cafe serves a great version (pictured above).
They have two locations, one in Waikiki and another in Chinatown. It's on the menu at both restaurants, though is priced a little lower at the Chinatown location.
Nice and golden, butter to the edges, and condensed milk allll over. Perfection.
Ingredients
Here's what you'll need:
White Bread
The bread is ideally milk bread which you can buy at all Japanese or Asian bakeries, and at pretty much every supermarket in Hawaii. There are many version of milk bread. I love the "family bread" from Epi-Ya and the "golden bread" from Brug Bakery. You can also use challah or brioche (Breadshop in Kaimuki makes excellent brioche).
Butter
Make sure to use salted butter. Have the butter at room temperature (for easier spreading).
Sweetened Condensed Milk
Any brand will work! I used the Whole Foods 365 brand for this recipe, but have also made this with Carnation (what we used growing up). There are also many other non-dairy versions of sweetened condensed milk these days...some made with coconut milk and oat milk!
Instructions
Let's make toast:
Toast!
Toast the bread until golden brown (this takes about 3-4 minutes at 400F if you use a toaster oven).
Butter!
Spread the salted butter all over the hot bread. Be generous! Make sure to spread the butter as far as you can to the edges.
Drizzle and Eat!
Drizzle the sweetened condensed milk on top. Eat hot asap and enjoy ^_^
Variations
Change the bread!
Try making this with brioche or challah or even dinner rolls. Milk bread is the "classic" bread for this recipe, but the salted butter and sweetened condensed milk combination is so delicious on any bread.
Broil after adding the condensed milk
We add the butter and sweetened condensed milk after toasting. But you can switch this up and try this order for a fun variation: butter the bread, drizzle the sweetened condensed milk on top, and then toast the bread (or you can broil it) until golden. Just a little different, and super tasty.
FAQ and Tips
There is another version of Hong Kong condensed milk toast that has peanut butter! It's also called Hong Kong-style fresh toast. It uses two slices of bread, features an egg batter and is deep fried.
I'll work on a recipe for this soon (I love fried food, but rarely make deep fried dishes at home).
This toast makes a great afternoon snack. If you're serving this to a group (and therefore might not be eating it the minute you finish drizzling sweetened condensed milk on top), I like to serve it sandwich style.
Here's how:
Use two slices of bread. Toast and butter both slices. Drizzle sweetened condensed milk on just one of the slices. Sandwich the two slices, with the butter side facing in. Then cut the sandwich into quarters (I like to make triangles), and serve on a little plate.
You can make many things! I like to use any leftover sweetened condensed milk to make: avocado smoothies (especially when Hawaii avocados are in season), rainbow jello (a local favorite), and azuki coffee jelly.
Hot coffee or hot milk tea, for SURE ^_^
