Sweet and salty homemade Honey Butter is super tasty on everything from toast to waffles and fresh bread. All you need is butter, honey, and sea salt! Bonus: it is very easy to make ^_^
A dish of housemade honey butter accompanies every basket of fresh baked breads at Kamuela Provision Company on the Big Island of Hawaii.
The bread basket includes Ube Pandesal and Ulu Loaf...three pieces of each. So Hawaii and so delicious. The bread is warm, hot from the oven. The butter is whipped. Together? Heavenly!
Kamuela Provision Company is located inside Hilton Waikoloa Village. It's the hotel resort's flagship restaurant and has been around for years. I remember visiting as a kid for family trips to the Big Island. And now, as an adult, it's still as beautiful and delicious as ever.
Hilton Waikoloa Village was generous enough to share their honey butter recipe me, and I'm happy to share it with you! The secret? Hawaiian honey and Hawaiian sea salt. Local ingredients can't be beat ^_^

Ingredients
Here's what you'll need:
- Unsalted butter, softened - Unsalted butter is the same thing as sweet butter.
- Hawaiian honey - Kamuela Provision Company uses Wilelaiki honey which you can purchase from Big Island Bees. It's pretty expensive online, but if you're in Hawaii, you can find it for a really good price at Costco Hawaii.
- Hawaiian sea salt - In Hawaii? Make sure to visit a local supermarket or Longs Drugs to check out all the different brands of Hawaiian sea salt, there are many.
See recipe card for quantities.
Hawaiian Honey
There are many brands of Hawaiian honey and Big Island Bees is one of the more popular brands. It also helps that they're available at Costco Hawaii! That's where we bought that big jar pictured above. I use it in any recipe that calls for honey.
Big Island Bees make several types of honey, and when I learned that Kamuela Provision Company uses specifically Wilelaiki honey, I was thrilled because that's what I already had available. Definitely use Hawaiian honey if you can get it, but if not, don't let that stop you from making this recipe. Just use the honey you have on hand.
Instructions
Let's get cooking!
Place the softened butter, honey, and sea salt in a mini food processor. You can also use a hand mixer or stand mixer. Or even mix it by hand using a spatula.
Blend/whip until everything is evenly mixed.
Serve the butter with anything (and everything!) from warm toast to waffles and pancakes or fresh bread. Enjoy ^_^
Substitutions and Variations
Here are a few simple ideas that are both tasty and easy to do:
- Cinnamon - Add a dash of cinnamon!
- Vanilla beans or vanilla extract - Add vanilla beans or a little vanilla extract.
- Powdered sugar - Add a tablespoon of powdered sugar to the mixture, this makes it extra creamy.
I recommend making the recipe as written the first time you do it. It's so popular for a reason! Then feel free to try different variations to find your favorite.
Equipment
We use a mini food processor to mix the honey butter because that's what we have at home. But if you prefer a more light and fluffy butter (very delicious), try using a hand mixer or a stand mixer.
We keep the mini food processor on the kitchen countertop because we use it for a bunch of other recipes like Ginger Scallion Sauce and Lemongrass Chicken. We also use it pretty often for mincing garlic because we use a lot of garlic haha.
Top Tip
Make sure the butter is softened before you mix it with the honey and sea salt. If the butter is too hard, it won't mix evenly. Remove the stick of butter from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before you plan to make the recipe.
If you're in a rush, just cut the stick of butter into small pieces so that it softens more quickly. (That's what I did for this recipe as you can see in the photo under the Instructions section of this post ^_^)
FAQ
Store the prepared butter in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to two weeks.
I like to take the butter out of the refrigerator 10-15 minutes before using it so that it has time to soften and is more spreadable.
No problem! A machine makes it faster and easier but you can definitely make honey butter by hand. All you need is a spatula for mixing, and a little patience.
This recipe calls for unsalted butter, but I noticed that most people buy salted butter. If you want to use salted butter for this recipe, just leave out the sea salt when making the honey butter so that the butter isn't too salty.
But you can still sprinkle a little sea salt on top of the finished butter right before serving. Good sea salt, especially Hawaiian sea salt, is hard to pass up ^_^
